5 fab ways to use biscuits in your wedding by nila holden

So you’re getting married..! Congratulations. What an exciting time for you…!

You’ve probably been scouring pinterest for lots of swoon worthy wedding decor, finishing touches and ways to personalise your big day. After all, it should be a reflection of you and your other half-to-be, full of personality and all the things that are great about you as a couple.

Here at Nila Holden bakery we make beautiful iced biscuits for life’s special occasions and we’ve got lots of biscuits to add that special touch to your wedding day. We’ve pulled together a quick list below of ways that real life brides – some of our many happy customers have used biscuits in their wedding day.

They’re engaged…!

He asked and she said yes! You couldn’t be happier for them, they make such a lovely couple (and you secretly can’t believe he waited this long to pop the question). Lots of excitement all round for the pending nuptials.

You’d like to send a small gift along with a note to wish the newly engaged couple well and help to mark the occasion. This Bride & Groom gift set is lovely, you can add their monogram for that personal touch. Also perfect as a wedding gift for the couple that already has everything. Or for those occasions when you’re just too slow off the mark and all the good stuff from the gift list has already been taken.

Will you be my bridesmaid..?

Why not use biscuits to pop the big question? No, not THAT question! THAT question has already been asked hence why you’re on a knifes edge, frantically pulling together spreadsheets of expenses and a to do list as long as your arm and turning into a bridezilla. (Remember – breathe!)

Of course, I mean asking your bestie, BFF and best mates if they’ll be your bridesmaid. There are so many ways you can pop the big question. How about with these pretty biscuits – customised with a name for that extra special touch. How could any friend say no when asked in such a sweet way? Guaranteed to get your bridesmaids agreeing to wear those soft lilac empire line dress you’ve got eye on for them.

One of our customers ordered our personalised unicorn biscuits to include in her bridesmaid treat boxes. Don’t they look amazing?

Wedding favours

One of the most popular ways to use biscuits in your wedding is have biscuit wedding favours. Iced biscuits are perfect as they can be customised to fit your theme. Different colours of icing or how about taking a design detail or accent from your wedding stationery for example and adding this to the design of your biscuits?

One of our most popular wedding favour biscuits are these personalised biscuits that double up as place cards and favours as each one is hand stamped with a guest’s name. How brilliant is that? No need to get separate place cards printed.

These monogram wedding favours are our next bestseller. Adding a monogram detail to your wedding stationery or favours is such a lovely & classic way to add a personal touch to your wedding. There’s something so romantic about seeing your initials entwined and side by side.

Treats for the little ones

I designed these love heart cookie pop favours for my own wedding a few years back. I was worried that the kiddies would chatter all the way through our wedding ceremony and racked my brains to find a way to keep them quiet – just for 25 mins or so, in a mess free-stress-free-way.

I thought that giving them something to eat might work well but wanted to avoid sticky fingers so came up with these love heart pops – each personalised with a name. They worked an absolute treat and have gone on to be a popular product too with brides.

Corporate biscuits for the Fussy Shopper

We were so excited when we were contacted by the lovely Sophie at the Fussy Shopper recently.  Sophie was looking for some corporate biscuits to send out to customers.

The Fussy Shopper offers personal shopping concierge and corporate gifting services, focusing on the luxury goods sector, and is a a trusted re-seller of Hermès products (be still my beating heart!).

The brief for the biscuits was to recreate a shopping bag in cookie form, a little like the biscuit bag cookies we made for Harrods recently, but with the Fussy Shopper branded colours and logo.

As we are just as particular and ‘fussy’ (pun intended!) about branding, corporate colours and logos we worked hard to come up with just right colour and design, offering Sophie a number of colourways and options to choose from.

In the end, the client Sophie went with the a shade of teal blue with black piped royal iced accents.

The client was super chuffed with her biscuits! If you are a Fussy Shopper customer, be sure to look out for these little beauties on your shopping travels.

Alice through the looking glass at Fortnum & Mason

If you’ve been in the Piccadilly area recently, you can’t have failed to notice the stunning “Alice through the Looking Glass” window displays in Fortnum & Mason’s iconic store.

Themed to coincide with the release of the new Tim Burton film, the windows are a whimsical & exquisitely styled homage to all things Mad Hatter and afternoon tea.

One of the centre pieces of the display is this beautiful teacup & saucer.

And Helena Bonham Carter’s rather formidable looking (and slightly scary)  Queen of Hearts.

And this beautiful timepiece. All surrounded by lots of lovely items from the Fortnum’s food hall & gift department.

And here are some delicious Alice in Wonderland biscuits that we’ve designed for Fortnum’s and are currently available to buy in the Food Hall.

Designing Biscuits for Disney Cakes & Sweets Magazine

You may have read our blog post last week about how we’ve been Sharing our Baking Expertise with Disney Cakes & Sweets Magazine.

Well this week, I thought I would share some more about the actual biscuit designs we worked on.  Next week, I’ll show you a little more about some of the other cakes and sweet treat projects we made.

We used a vanilla cookie recipe for all the biscuits below.  We can’t share the exact Disney recipe due to copyright but we have our own vanilla cookie recipe that we’re happy to share with you.  If you’re looking for a simple, easy to follow vanilla cookie recipe be sure to check it out.

In all instances, the team at Creative Plus sent us the cookie cutters and brand / colour guidelines for each character. And then left it to us to translate the graphics into a cookie design.

In each case, as the character is a living breathing person, dinosaur or animal, the key thing was to capture the essence & personality in the tiny details – the eyes, hair, jewellery.  All the time, being mindful that we would need to explain the steps for the printed tutorial. So we needed to keep it simple – a real challenge!

Some of the biscuits were decorated using fondant/sugarpaste as a base, some with royal icing. And we used a mix of royal icing and coloured fondant/sugarpaste for the details.

First up, we have some delightful Lady & the Tramp biscuits. A little ‘old school’ in the timeline of Disney classics but I was secretly pleased that there were a few projects featuring characters from my childhood!

Next up Flounder and Sebastian from Disney’s Little Mermaid. Now these are two that I remember, as when my daughter what little, she loved to fall asleep listening to Little Mermaid. I remember the music was particularly good – Sebastian does a few good numbers in the film including the classic Caribbean inspired ‘Under the Sea!’ Love these bright colourful designs.

Next up, Princess Sofia the First. I had to admit to not recognising this Disney Princess who is a more recent addition to Disney Royalty. This was one of our first designs and it was tricky to find a way to bring the beautiful dress and jewellery to life without overcrowding the cookie but I think we managed this really well with some simple but effective royal iced detail.

And then, two of my personal favourites, both in terms of the projects and the movies, Merida from Brave with her wonderful locks of hair, and the Good Dinosaur.

Instore tasting at Fortnum & Mason for Mother’s Day

Earlier this week be popped into Fortnum & Mason for an instore tasting session.

We offer in store tastings and cookie decorating workshops as part of our support package for our key stockists to help drive sales and increase footfall into stores. Having spoken with our stockists who range from farm shops, to deli’s and other high end food halls, interactive in store activities such as tastings or cookie decorating sessions are by far the best driver of sales.

And for us, it’s always great to step out of the bakery and meet our stockists face to face and get to know your stores but also to chat to customers and visitors to the store to explain our story, give them an opportunity to trial our products and hopefully keep them coming back for more!

We had a great time at Fortnum & Mason this Mother’s Day and it was great to see the fantastic response to our exclusive 3D Mother’s Day Teacups.

If you’d like to discuss a bespoke tasting or decorating session for your store then please do drop us a line.

Cookie Decorating Classes at Notonthehighstreet

It’s heartwarming to see just how excited sensible professional adults can get about cookie decorating!

Notonthehighstreet are huge fans of our cookies.  A couple of weeks ago we were invited into the Notonthehighstreet HQ in Richmond to deliver a cookie decorating class for their staff team. The company had faced a difficult few weeks and the decorating class was a fun and creative Friday afternoon treat for staff.

We gave a short talk on the do’s and don’ts of cookie decorating, and a few tips and ticks on decorating biscuits with royal icing and how to decorate biscuits with fondant.

It was a super fun day and the staff team really enjoyed getting hands on with tubes of brightly coloured icing, and sprinkles and sweeties galore for the perfect and delicious finishing touches.

To bring a bit of healthy competition to proceedings, we also ran a competition for the best decorated cookies.

All in all, it was a fantastic day.  Even more fantastic was receiving such great feedback from NOTHS:

“I just wanted to send an email to say THANK YOU SO MUCH! The biscuit decorating was such a highlight of everyone’s day and everyone is having a lovely afternoon snack! I really appreciate all the effort you put into the class and we would love to do something again here at NOTHs..!”
